Project 1, Part 1
What Is Food Really?
Is food really something that could mean a whole lot to people or is it just eating is a way of surviving? Well no food is more than just eating, yes we need it survive but what else do humans need other than just food to survive. Don’t you just like to be surrounded by the people that love you and have a wonderful time shoving your face full of tasty food, because if we were to use Soylent as an antidote to a “ problem” (Rhinehart) people have with obtaining food/ eating to much, the time it takes to make the food, or the fact that it’s simple to make. Does it really solve all those problems because if so, then the world would be so boring and it would almost be like the world’s a never ending cycle. Rhineharts solution to solving world hunger definitely has pros like having a guaranteed 3 meals a day or more free time but in all honesty the cons from the Soylent would definitely outweigh the pros of this product.
Rob Rhinehart brought around Soylent thinking he could solve a big “problem” people have with food but it really wouldn’t, it would just arise a bunch of other problems about food in general such as the social life, or the memories it creates. Soylent started off as idea from him making an app and not having enough money to buy groceries. As Rhinehart continued his research on producing a product that not only will fill you all day long but also be cheap to put together. He created this wonderful synthetic product called Soylent. Which once perfected caught the eye of many people in many different ways. One way would have been the fact that “ My physique has noticeably improved, my skin is clearer, my teeth whiter, my hair thicker, and my dandruff gone” (Rhinehart) who wouldn’t want that to happen to them but is it really worth the loss of what actual food gives you? Of course not when you eat actual food you have the aroma that comes from the meal or the fact that your taste buds make your mouth salivate.
Soylent would take away from a lot of the world’s cultural, or even just family meals. The fact that it was created and its not natural to the human body should really make people wonder if it’s the worth the risk. My view on this is if Soylent was the only food source on earth how would you talk about it or love it, if the flavoring could remind you of something nasty. As my grandma loved to state “ it comes from the love and effort you put into it” there’s none of that if all you had to do was put powder in a water bottle and be able to run off that all day. That would also ruin the social aspect because people would go have meals together at restaurants or even at the dinner table but that wouldn’t happen because your meal could become as simple as a water bottle that’s full of “gooey lemonade” (Rhinehart). The inventions definitely was worth the thought but it needs a few revisions though for the cause and effects it will have on the human population if not it will put us down and make us all boring people. People should realize this because it will become their worst nightmare having it around.
Soylent has a few gray areas that need some clarifying such as why it so bad for you, or such as why it shouldn’t become the new things college students consider to save money. Rhinehart made this to help people but, what he didn’t realize is if this would have taken over people will lose a lot of nutrients that natural food gives you. As the Doctor believes “ would it be a good idea” absolutely not because phytochemicals that come from plants are important for health benefits. That’s not all either because “ Lycopene which makes tomatoes red… can lower rates of prostate cancer; flavonoid compound makes blueberries blue ….. been known to lower rates if diabetes”(Doctor) which is a reason why moving over to soylent would be a bad move since we would still be missing key nutrients to help fight diseases.

What Is Food Really?
Do people really eat food just to survive or do we eat food for other reasons? Of course people eat food for survival purposes but we eat for the social aspects like going to a restaurant or maybe just to hang out with family to catch up with everyone. Lizzie Widdicombe mentions in her New Yorker essay, “The End of Food,” that people are slowly replacing their meals with a simplified or easier solution like Soylent. As Rhinehart the creator of Soylent, tells Widdicombe that, Soylent a chemically based product will not only replace cooking but making food in general ten times easier to make. Soylent may be easier to make, but it can’t provide what hand cooked meals would in the grand skeem of what matters to some people’s life. Soylent would not be able to fuel a good life for people because it doesn’t take time from you to grow, or to bond with the food being made or the ingredients you put into your meal, and there’s no way of cultivating it like we can with real food. Lizzie Widdicombe definitely made some beautiful points about the pros of Soylent, but with this fully Synthetic product being a solvent in replacing food would take so much adventures, cultural traditions, and identity from food itself. Soylent can not help us achieve are best lives, due to the fact that it won’t bring cultural values, memories in life, or a social aspect to life.
Soylent was created to save people time to do other things and money to spend elsewhere besides on food. Lizzie mentioned that when Rhinehart first started out he was “ working frantically, they already had no social life. As they examined their budget, one big problem remained: food” with the creation of Soylent this would allow more free time for people or maybe expand their budget to varieties of different ideas. Rhinehart say’s that this would open up your hurisen with new adventure but what about those meals created by chefs or those fantastic meals your mom makes. Rhineharts invention astonishing although it frees up so much time or saves you a lot of money it would take away from so many meaning to life.
People wouldn’t live the their best lives if they didn’t have real food to have for meals because real food brings so much enjoyment to life when you really think in depth about it. When you think of food what comes to your mind because I know when I think of food my family comes to my mind and all the adventure that my taste buds have taken me. Food in general brings the thought of maybe the chance of going out to eat at a seafood restaurant with one of the best clam chowders, or the juicy dripping lobster roll in a nice sweet hawaiian bun. Yes food literally brings happiness to people’s life by taking them to another country just to try out a different food such as Spain for their cultural food or maybe England for the lamb chops. Your best life wouldn’t be the best without all these different selections that food chain restaurants bring to you or the recipe your grandma has had for generations. As a person how could you live without sweets just think about that because in my eighteen years of being around I know for sure that a nice double chocolate chip cookie came in handy. I understand that the impulse to have more time brings this product closer to peoples arms but just to think that I wouldn’t have been able to explain to you what rice and beans are from my favorite meal essay brings a lot of questions to hand is this really a good idea or is it not.
Rob Rhinehart brought around Soylent thinking he could solve a big “problem” people have with food but in reality Soylent would be taking away from are social life and the memories we create. If this whole idea of sub existing on Soylent is so great why would a doctor not agree or even a college kid that struggles to make it by disagree, well that’s when you look at how bad this product would be for people to live their best lives. Don’t you just like being surrounded by the people that love you and have a wonderful time dining on food, because if we were to use Soylent as an antidote to a “problem” people have with obtaining food/ eating to much, or the time it takes to make the food we wouldn’t have any of those wonderful aspects of living are best life. What is food?
Do people eat food just to survive or do we eat food for other reasons? Of course, people eat food for survival purposes, but we also eat for the social aspects like going to a restaurant or maybe just to hang out with the family to catch up with everyone. Lizzie Widdicombe mentions in her New Yorker essay, “The End of Food,” that people are slowly replacing their meals with a simplified or easier solution like Soylent. As Rhinehart, the creator of Soylent, tells Widdicombe that, Soylent, a chemically based product, will not only replace cooking but making food, in general, ten times easier to make. Soylent may be more effortless to make, but it can’t provide what hand cooked meals would in the grand scheme of what matters to some people’s life. Soylent would not be able to fuel a good life for people because it doesn’t take time from you to grow, or to bond with the food being made or the ingredients you put into your meal, and there’s no way of cultivating it like we can with real food. Lizzie Widdicombe made some beautiful points about the pros of Soylent, but with this fully Synthetic product being a solvent in replacing food would take so many adventures, cultural traditions, and beneficial aspects that come with some food.
Soylent was created to save people time to do other things and money to spend elsewhere besides on food. Lizzie mentioned that when Rhinehart first started he was “working frantically, they already had no social life. As they examined their budget, one big problem remained: food”(Widdicombe) with the creation of Soylent this would allow more free time for people or maybe expand their budget to varieties of different ideas. Rhinehart says that this would open up your horizon with new adventure but what about those meals created by chefs or those fantastic meals your mom makes. Rhinehart’s invention is astonishing although it frees up so much time or saves you a lot of money it would take away from so many meaning to life.
People wouldn’t live their life to the fullest if they didn’t have real food to have for meals because real food brings so much adventure to life. When you think of food what comes to your mind? I know when I think of food my family comes to my mind and all the adventure that my taste buds have taken me. For expample in my favortie food essay I described a meal from my grandma’s recipes that “ a huge slab of rice … and drizzle the sweet syrup that the beans produce”. Compare the adventures falvors of my meal to Soylent which reminds people of “ gooey leomade”(Widdicombe). As Rhinehart mentions in Lizzie Widdicombe’s article, “farming should become more industrialized” if that happens what about all the emission from auto-motorized products. By switching to Soylent it will take away so many roles people play such as the farming or raising of animals that humans do to bring real chewable food in front of you.
Rob Rhinehart brought around Soylent thinking he could solve a big “problem” people have with food but in reality, Soylent would be taking away from our social life and the memories we create. Food, in general, brings to mind cafeteria but if we got rid of real food we wouldn’t have this enjoyment. When Rhinehart opens the fridge and annouces “ the college-student fridge of the future” my experience in college going to the cafe and eatting with my friends is the only real time for socializing. You would lose that oppurtunity for socializing and strengthening your bonds with your friends because Soylent doesnt have any need for those aspect of leaving you dorm.
Your best life wouldn’t be the greatest without the optortunity of strengthening bonds you have with your grandmothers meal. In my favorite food essay, my grandma loved to say “[food] comes from the love and effort you put into it” there’s none of that if all you had to do was put the powder in a water bottle and be able to run off that all day. One way Rhinehart mentioned the good effects of Soylent is “My physique has noticeably improved, my skin is clearer, my teeth whiter, my hair thicker, and my dandruff is gone” (Widdicombe). Who wouldn’t want to gain back their beautiful body but is it worth the loss of the strengthening your bond with your peers? Of course not, when you eat actual food you have the aroma that comes from the meal or the fact that you get to enjoying this meal with the people you love and care about. Rhinehart’s product was a helpful creation but just think that not only do you gain but you lose more than you gain.
Soylent would take away from a lot of the world’s cultural life, such as family meals or the differnet ways people created their meals. The fact that it was created and it’s not natural to the human body should make people wonder if it’s worth the risk. The risk with Soylent is that those cultures would no longer have to exist because as Rhinehart stated in Lizzies article “ he tends to emphasize something else about his product: the idea that you could live live on Soylent alone.” Soylent would ruin the cultural aspect because people who would no longer have meals together at restaurants, or at the dinner table. Which in turn you would lose cultural aspects such as greeting each other, cooking together, or sharing new recipes. None of this would happen because your meal could become as simple as a water bottle that’s full of “gooey lemonade” that Lizzie Mentioned. People should realize that their culture and family life is at risk if they were to change over to a Soylent only diet.
Soylent would cause people to lose out on the benefical aspects in food, since some food give life saving nurtrients. Widdicombe mentioned that Rhinehart made this to help people but, what he didn’t realize is if Soylent would have taken over people will lose a lot of nutrients that natural food gives you. When Lizzie mentioned the doctors thought on Soylent he said: “you can live without plant chemicals but you may not live maximally”(Widdicombe) which shows true because phytochemicals that come from plants are important. They have important key substances that help with diseases “ Lycopene which makes tomatoes red… can lower rates of prostate cancer; flavonoid compound makes blueberries blue …..have been known to lower rates of diabetes” which Widdicombe mentions. If these key nutrients were to have been loss then people would have had to find other ways of fight off these nasty diseases.
If this whole idea of sub existing on Soylent is so great why would a doctor not agree or even a college kid that struggles to make it by disagree? Don’t you just like being surrounded by the people that love you and have a wonderful time dining on food? If we were to use Soylent as an antidote to a “problem” people have with obtaining food/ eating too much, or the time it takes to make the food we wouldn’t have any of those beautiful aspects of living our best life. If Soylent was the only source of food then life as humans would be boring. They say that living a life on Soylent will make life easier but how about all those social aspects of food, or the adventure’s food takes you on, and cultural ways it will affect people’s cooking because instead of hand prepping everything is already been made.
