Learning Outcome 3

During the duration of my English class, I was able to further my knowledge of becoming a skillful reader.  After annotating a piece I was able to think of which way I understood the text I was working with. One, in particular, was David Foster Wallace who talked about the human’s consideration for others species. After reading and annotating the essay back at the beginning of the semester I didn’t get the point that he was trying to make. Then after rereading and annotating the essay a second time closer to the end, it got me to think why didn’t I see the point David Foster Wallace was making the first time around. Gilroys text points out the process of annotating and the step you take to relate outside ideas to what your reading. When looking at Gilroy’s passage I could relate to her when she described how “ annotating puts you actively and immediately in the ‘dialogue’ with the author and the issues and ideas you encounter in the written text.” After annotating  “Consider the Lobster” by David Foster Wallace I was able to draw more by inquiring the fact that I would write down for example ” define what Homaridae means or contextualize the text by sumarizing how it talked about the low class of lobsters.” When I reacted in the margins I was able to understand the text better and relate it to outside experiences. By employing the techniques such as inquiring and critical reading, taught by professor Miller I was able to take those learning skills and transfer them into real life experiences.
